Instructions for Food and Drinks

Objective of the Game:
This interactive memory game is designed to help students identify and categorize vocabulary related to food and drinks. Students develop their ability to associate common food items with broader food groups (e.g., "banana" with "fruit") while improving word recognition, vocabulary retention, and mental organization of concepts.

What It Includes:

  • 18 image-word cards representing food and drink items (e.g., milk, pizza, apple, cheese)

  • 18 category cards with group names such as Fruit, Meat, Drink, Dessert, Animal Product, etc.

  • A total of 36 cards to be matched into 18 correct pairs

Educational Use in Teaching:
This game can be used to reinforce vocabulary introduced in food and nutrition units or as part of a broader lesson on healthy eating, meal planning, or cultural foods. It supports both visual learners (via images) and linguistic learners (via category-word association) and promotes critical thinking as students classify items. It is especially effective in small group settings or pair work.

Background Concepts Covered:

  • Classification of food by type (e.g., fruits vs. animal products)

  • Vocabulary related to meals, eating, and cooking

  • Cognitive skills like memory, matching, and sorting

  • Foundations for discussions on balanced diets, shopping lists, or nutrition

This resource is appropriate for beginner to pre-intermediate English learners, young learners, or as a fun vocabulary review tool in general ESL/EFL settings.

1. Image Memory

MemoryMemory - The level consists of 18 pairs (consisting of words paired with pictures) and all of them are practiced in every game round. The student's task is to find two cards that match. If two matching cards are found, they are removed from the board. The game is finished when all 18 pairs of cards have been found and no cards are left on the board. There is no limit to the number of allowed misses, so the only thing that counts is finding all card pairs. There is no time limit. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then it will show which pairs of cards match - and try to complete the level again.

2. Spell the word

Guess wordGuess word - The level consists of 16 words, but a maximum of 1 word are practiced per game round. The student has to find the word or sentence by guessing letters from the alphabet. If the suggested letter is in the word, it is filled in at the correct positions in the letter slots. If the letter is not in the word, a balloon pops. If the player can guess the correct letters and find the word before all 5 balloons run out, the round is won. On the last attempt, a button is activated so that the player can get a clue to the requested word. There is no time limit. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then the correct word will be displayed - and try to complete the level again.

Calculation of knowledge points and medals

Each completed game level in Food and Drinks gives 1 knowledge points. You can collect a maximum of 2 knowledge points by completing all 2 levels.
In the game Food and Drinks, you can earn a total of 6 medals. Medals are awarded based on how many times you have completed a level:
  • Bronze medal: after completing 2 rounds.
  • Silver medal: after completing 5 rounds.
  • Gold medal: after completing 10 rounds.
Knowledge points are only awarded for levels you have not completed before, meaning those that do not yet have checked green circles. Even after completing a level and earning both knowledge points and medals, you can continue practicing it. However, this will not grant any additional knowledge points or medals.
